With the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company trying to crush any resistance to the casualisation of working conditions, dockers refused to cross the picket line of sacked colleagues. The ensuing dispute showed the tremendous solidarity and collaboration of port workers internationally. Tony Nelson, a docker’s shop-steward, tells us that, “the big achievement of the Liverpool docks dispute was how we brought everyone together”.
